ACCESSIBILITYSTATEMENT
ASCENDCHESS is built for serious improvers, including players returning to the game later in life, players with low vision, and players with motor or cognitive disabilities. Excluding anyone at the door contradicts the whole premise, so accessibility is something we work at, not an afterthought.
Our target
We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA across the pages a player needs to sign up, train, and track progress. That means keyboard operability, visible focus, labeled form fields, sufficient color contrast, respect for reduced-motion preferences, and screen-reader-announced page titles and alerts.
What works today
- Keyboard navigation through sign-up, login, the dashboard, and your profile, with a visible focus indicator and a "skip to main content" link.
- Form fields with associated labels and validation messages announced to assistive technology.
- Dialogs that announce themselves, trap nothing you can't escape, and close with the Escape key.
- A reduced-motion mode that honors your operating-system "reduce motion" setting and disables animations.
- Adjustable text size on your profile, saved per device.
Known limitations
We would rather disclose these honestly than claim a clean bill of health:
- The chess board is not yet fully screen-reader operable. Reading a position and making moves by keyboard with move-by-move announcements is in progress. Until it ships, board-heavy surfaces (drills, analysis, repertoire editing) are not fully usable with a screen reader alone. This is our top accessibility priority.
- Charts do not yet have data-table alternatives. Trajectory and imbalance charts convey information visually; an accessible text/table equivalent is planned.
- Drills have no audio cues yet for correct/incorrect feedback beyond the on-screen indication.
